Story Development – Year 13 FMP

STORY DEVELOPMENT:

Story Development:

STORY 1 – TRAILER RECUT ON THE MEG:

My initial idea during the beginning of the FMP was circling around a few storylines, format and ideas. Essentially, earlier I decided to create a Trailer Recut on the movie; The Meg. The Meg is about an underwater research facility who are under threat owing to a 75-foot prehistoric shark. The Meg is an action and adventure film. My idea was to effectively turn into a Horror movie. The reason for this was due to Horror being a creative and insightful genre with using music and editing as a predominant tool. In addition to this, Horror genre is one of my favorite genres to watch and create. For my last FMP; I created a Horror Trailer on hallucinations and haunted sightings.(It’s Here). Therefore, I thought how I could refine my skills in the genre of Horror and create this trailer. Furthermore, trailer is also a similar content which I created last year but for a movie instead of a recut. My pivotal tools to create this Trailer Recut would have been to use The Meg’s action scenes and clips featuring the Shark (Meg). With the use of dramatic music, frequent cuts, rapid transition and focus on jump scares/action; I would have been able to put justice to it. The use of Capcut and its dynamic storytelling and use of multiple transitions would have allowed me to create this recut. Additionally, it would have featured The Meg as a dark entity or a source of danger to the characters such as The Hunting or Pet Sematary.

Why This Idea Did Not Work:

This idea essentially did not work was due to Repetition. Last year, I created a Horror trailer on Haunted sightings where I featured in it. The fact that this was a Trailer Recut meant essentially the same format; Trailer. Consequently, the idea of a “horror trailer” means the same research and codes/conventions which I used last year. The use of music, editing and transitions would essentially have been quite similar if not same. My editing on CapCut would have been in the same manner as a Horror trailer with rapid editing and breaks between scenes to create suspense. Furthermore, my story development, shot types and research would have been parallel and is what I wanted to avoid. In my FMP, I wanted to create a format which I am comfortable with, whilst simultaneously introducing a new concept to engage the viewers.

STORY 2 – IT’S HERE PART 2:

My second story which I had worked on was a sequel to It’s Here. It’s Here was my Horror trailer for my Year 12 FMP. As a filmmaker, it is a role to be creative and have an insightful sense on films and franchises. A sequel provided me an opportunity to be creative as a director and continue my storytelling skills. What I decided was to create a Part 2 of the story from last year. Essentially it would pick up from where it left off from. My previous story was about Ali who died from an accident and whose friend, Max, (me) deals with haunted sightings and hallucination of him. At the end, the trailer concludes with a cliffhanger with the dialogue “why did you do this to me”. Subsequently, revealing how Max was part of the conspiracy and hence might have been murder. This topic would have continued in my Part 2. My initial plan was to create another trailer of the outcome of that cliffhanger. This includes scenes of depression, continued hallucinations, scenes of extreme horror, stage of police and a part 2 of what was in the first part but in a Murder Mystery manner. This would be enhanced by Capcut editing software and its range in styles, themes and effects to depict Horror.

WHY THIS IDEA DID NOT WORK:

This idea did not work due to the scale or budget it was supposed to be made. The use of stages and the use of equipment was not feasible at a pivotal level like FMP. Subsequently, this meant that a lot of my FMP and practical content was relying on my recording which was putting my FMP at a risk. During our assembly, we were told specifically and by our form tutor to avoid creating content which requires too much filming as it is too much of being “dependent”. The use of acting in this trailer was necessary and it was not possible due to other students working on their respective projects. In addition to this, the topic of another trailer essentially meant repetition and the same concept being presented again. The unique idea of a Part 2 did sound enticing and compelling but essentially required the same codes and conventions of a Horror trailer. The use of my Research, Context, Planning and trailer would have been the same as the topic was the same. This essentially meant how this idea was not feasible and required an unique topic outside of the Horror genre.

STORY 3 – AND….SIX!

My Story 3 was about one of my most passionate subjects and topics; Cricket. Cricket is one of my most favorite sports and played in my School Cricket Team which is something close to my personality. Initially, I thought I could use Premiere Pro to tell an engaging story about Cricket and its cricketers and some of its distinguished cricket shots. This includes Cover Drive, Straight Drive, Helicopter Shot, Pull-Shot, Scoop, Snake Shot and Reverse – Hit. Essentially, I thought how I could use World Cup success and its story of how India won its 2 world cups; first in 1983 and second in 2011. Furthermore, what I had panned was a compelling narrative about Cricket, Cricketers and their shots and how India lifted their 2 world cups. Through the use of Premiere Pro, I would have created an entertaining story which depicted India and its vast fascination and craze for the ultimate sport of Cricket with its legendary and notable cricketers and its signature shots. The use of music, transitions between cricket shots and the culture of India would have depicted a compelling story of triumph and Sport; Cricket.

WHY THIS IDEA DID NOT WORK:

This idea essentially was quite descriptive and engaging to me personally due to my fascination and equation with Cricket. However, Cricket is not a sport which is regular to our age group especially in the UK where Football is predominantly a more popular sport. Subsequently, it would have been much more difficult to promote this video and make it a success as it is not a well-known sport. Although, it is UK’s second most popular sport – not a huge majority of people play it. Following this, I had created a video based on the Top Cricket Grounds of all time during our Transitions Project. Apart from repetition around the same topic, that video did not get a lot of viewership. Therefore, to prevent this from happening in my most pivotal project; FMP, I decided to base my video on a more global and social topic which is impactful. By doing this topic which has already been tried and tested enables my project for downfall as one of the key pillars is Envision and Success. This FMP has to be planned to be made a success. Therefore, unfortunately this Cricket Documentary would not have been successful or feasible as my ideal topic.

STORY 4 – SERIAL KILLER DOCUMENTARY:

After my third story; I was focusing on my strengths and what all topics and format I can use for my FMP to enable me a Distinction. From here, I modified my Story 3 format; Found Footage to more detail. After some talk with my form tutor and looking back on my previous projects – I noticed a pattern. Usually, my found footage styled videos or also known as Documentaries were getting views on YouTube. Examples are Rosa Parks with 138 views and Top Horror Films ( Horrid Horror) with 1.5k views which was both created by me. From here, I saw the growth of my Documentaries and decided to use this as my format due to the level of success I was receiving. My Story 4 was based on a serial killer Documentary. These were supposed to be based on the most famous serial killers in history like Jack: The Ripper or Harold Shipman who was known as Dr.Death. The topic was serial killer was inspired by a previous global academy student – MADESH KALAICHELVAN ON the Mystery behind Natelle Kremal’s Death. The use of Crime Documentary was certainly famous according to Google Trends and Netflix and allowed me to reflect on the success of this upcoming Documentary.  The editing was supposed to be on CapCut due to the range of effects, transitions and themes to tell a gripping story. The aim of this Documentary was to engage my audience on a compelling narrative on one of the most predominant genres of all time; Crime Drama.

WHY THIS IDEA DID NOT WORK:

My Story 4 essentially did not work and go as planned due to its exact topic. After I decided and pondered on my Story 4, we had our frequent assemblies where we were explicitly told to not create content on anything dark. This includes mental heath topics or serial killers. The reason was due to showing my made content to a professional and potential employer and having to vicious of a topic to present. Therefore, it does not make my content suitable. Furthermore, due to a previous Global Academy student creating their FMP on Crime Drama essentially prohibited me from continuing. Subsequently, due to the finding and developing my own niche. From here, I decided to change my topic but modify the format to a Documentary due to its range and real-life events which it can represent in a professional format to make it realistic.

Final Story Approved – Immigration Documentary:

I’MMIGRANTS:

My final Story which I finalized was my Immigration Documentary topic and format. This format of Documentary was further enhanced & modified according to my strength ; found footage. From my previous documentaries and two previous storylines, I realized how my primary strength relies on Found footage style editing and this is where I decided to create a Documentary. The target audience to this Documentary was 18-24 which is the same as my YouTube Demographics. These YouTube analytics effectively worked for my previous successful documentaries ; Rosa Parks (138 views) and Top Horror Films (1.5k views).

My story essentially focused on the process and history of Immigration whilst discussing the legal and illegal manners in which people Immigrate into the UK. Subsequently, I will be talking about specific countries like India. Coincidentally, for Easter I will be visiting India, and this will allow me to record additional footage of India. This will depict the diversity and culture of India whilst providing context. Furthermore, it will depict my culture and background, and which is why it means a lot to me. This will be enhanced by CapCut and its storytelling abilities through music, transitions, real life stories/ experiences and 4k Quality footage on Pexels. Through this, I will be creating a compelling narrative on Immigration or known as I’MMIGRANTS – to educate the audience and engage them on a social topic.

WHY THIS IDEA WORKS:

My idea of a Documentary works really effectively according to my editing style. On YouTube, I have received the most success from my videos which are found footage – Rosa Parks (138 views) and Top Horror Films – (1.5k views). According to my YouTube analytics as well, the most success is from my Documentaries with the primary audience being 18-24. Subsequently, this enables me to focus on this audience due to being the viewers who have viewed my previous Documentaries. In addition to this, with the same format of Documentary for my FMP; this audience will be my target.

Furthermore, my topic is a more social and impactful which affects numerous individuals especially from my community. In this Documentary, I will be able to share statistics, data, real – life experiences and footage of India to reflect its culture and provide context for my audience – being my background in which I can specialise in. The resources include websites like Gov.uk, Statista, articles of Shared Heritage, Books such as A Thousand Splendid Suns and Videos/Movies of Smoke and Mirror Documentary and Immigration Documentary.

This allows me to focus my FMP on a topic which I am passionate about and my editing strength – Documentary.
